Watch Henry Rollins search for the root of his anger (video)
Henry Rollins, punk renaissance man, has made a career out of being angry, first as a lead singer — for D.C. hardcore band State of Alert, Black Flag, and eventually his eponymous group — and also as a comedian, spoken-word artist (Click Track has new tour details), author, actor, activist, and film critic. (I challenge you to find a more varied Wikipedia bio.) But is his anger the result of his upbringing — though raised in Glover Park, Rollins has told interviewers he had a rough childhood — or of a genetic disposition? In an upcoming episode of the National Geographic Channel's Explorer series, entitled "Born to Rage?," Rollins goes searching for carriers of the "warrior gene," which scientists have linked to violent behavior. And where does his search take him? A Harley repair shop, naturally.
In this clip from the show, which airs Dec. 14, the shop's macho repairmen are treated not unlike animals in the wild. "These six bikers have led tough and sometimes violent lives," the narrator intones. "It's a world that Henry can relate to." No stranger to videotaped confrontation, Rollins appears through the garage doorway wearing his trademark scowl, and nods at the men like he wants to start a bar fight. But instead, these men sit down with him for an impromptu therapy session featuring revelations of violence and uxorial infidelity, replete with soft-focus reenactments.
This clip should be called, "Who has the biggest penis?"
Bonus clip: Rollins displays his aforementioned rage by punching a fan in the face:
