The best in film, music, and visual art tonight.
Tonight: 930 F Street screening at Watha T. Daniel-Shaw Library
The D.C. Music Salon, a regular meeting of area residents and experts who are enthusiastic about everything from the early days of the Howard Theatre to the heyday of Trouble Funk, discuss the 9:30 Club this month. The program will include memories from people who worked at the music venue when it was still a little hole in the wall at 930 F Street, NW and a screening of the extremely difficult-to-find documentary, 930 F Street. Tonight: Gang of Four at 9:30 Club
First it was Wire, now Gang of Four? What's with English post-punk bands getting back together and actually recording new albums that critics haven't trashed? I have yet to hear Content, partly because it contains the most hideous cover art I've seen in a while, but it could underwhelm and I'd still rush to see the band live. If you've heard Entertainment! or Solid Gold, then you understand me completely. If you haven't heard those albums, just nod and pretend that you have. (Ryan Kearney)
Through Mar. 12: Heirlooms at Transformer Gallery
A bouquet by Lauren Rice is certainly a forget-me-not. The artist deconstructs the traditional floral arrangement until it becomes something altogether menacing: an over-sized jumble of crafting materials that overwhelms Transformer's small space. Rice flips the femininity of floral arrangements, so they're not neat and pretty, but rather an uncontrolled tumorous growth (when this reporter visited the gallery, one of the sculptures ensnared a visitor's hood). The artist compares them to dismembered bodies. Depending on your relationship status, it's either the best or worst thing to do before Valentine's Day, ever. (Maura Judkis)
