TBD Picks: Marsha Ambrosius at Birchmere
Singer Marsha Ambrosius, formerly of the hip-hop-soul duo Floetry, could've gone with an extremely safe video treatment for "Far Away," the lead single from her debut solo album, Late Nights, Early Mornings. But instead of doing some variation on the same old boy-meets-girl or boy-breaks-up-with-girl story, Ambrosius used the music video to tell the story of a young black man who is bullied for being gay and commits suicide as a result. The clip is a tribute to a friend of hers who also tried to take his own life after enduring harassment about his sexuality. While Ambrosius has a lush voice, for sure, she's doesn't want people just to like her songs; she wants to challenge them to think and, sometimes, even change their thinking. Ambrosius is at the Birchmere tonight, with Melanie Fiona and Anthony David, as part of the BET "Music Matters" tour.
