The organizers of Rock the Bells announced the annual hip-hop festival's line-up and dates last night. The bad news is: There's no D.C. tour date currently planned for this summer. The good news is: D.C. won't have to suffer through a repeat of last year's Lauryn Hill debacle.
Hill, who in August kept the crowd gathered at Merriweather Post Pavilion for the 2010 Rock the Bells festival waiting for hours, is headlining the tour, along with Nas, Cypress Hill, Erykah Badu, and Mos Def and Talib Kweli performing as Black Star. For the past three years the festival has come to Columbia's Merriweather Post; last night only Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Boston dates were announced.
In years past, the festival announced a handful of dates in May and promised more to come, but in last night's press release, RTB organizers Guerilla Union said only that "[t]his year's festival will head to four major North American markets," and made no mention of additional dates. Last year's, Rock the Bells only made four festival stops, but Merriweather Post was included on the tour. Doesn't sound very promising for D.C.'s golden era hip-hop fans.
For those interested in driving up to Boston or New York, the ticket pre-sale begins June 3.
