New Orleans bounce star Big Freedia was featured in the New York Times last year, making her the latest artist to temporarily pull the decades-old gleefully obscene genre from the obscurity of New Orleans nightclubs and hip-hop blogs and give it its latest period of national attention. The July 2010 article, of which Freedia was the focus, referred to her brand of bounce as a subgenre called "sissy bounce," an oft-used nickname for the music made by Freedia, Katey Red, Sissy Nobby, and other bounce rappers who identify as gay or transgender. While mainstream media immediately got caught up in the gender wank, Freedia has said, time and again, that there is no "sissy bounce"--there is only bounce.
