- Splendor in the...bluegrass? David Rawlings and Gillian Welch are in town this week.
THURSDAY: Tank at the Birchmere
Like big dudes nicknamed "Tiny" and short guys called "Stretch," the singer Tank is actually a big 'ol softie. Yes, his perma-frown and the military-style dog tags available at his merch booth scream "rapper," but the Milwaukee native will be performing from his most recent album of touching R&B love songs, last year's Now or Never, at the Birchmere at 7 p.m. $39.50.
TUESDAY: Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
At the inaugural NPR listening party back in April, All Songs Considered's Bob Boilen played a variety of songs -- without giving revealing anything about each of the tracks -- and asked audience members to guess the artists and rate each piece. One of the voices most easily identified was that of Gillian Welch. Whether you're a fan of her brand of folk-y, rural, Americana music or not, her voice is distinctively beautiful and impossible to forget once you've heard it. She's at Strathmore tonight, performing from her latest album, The Harrow & The Harvest with guitarist David Rawlings. 8 p.m. Sold out.
THURSDAY: The Evens at Fort Reno
How great is the appeal of The Evens? Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina have charmed everyone from babies to mental patients at St. Elizabeths. So, they should have absolutely no problem with overheated indie rock fans. A great, if not exactly surprising, get for the 2011 Fort Reno concert series. 7:15 p.m. Free.
