- Black Cobain performs with Wale on New Year's Day.
Yeah, we all know what Saturday is, and at this point, we've all seen a million event guides telling us all the great shows going on to celebrate New Year's Eve. Well, maybe you couldn't find a sitter, or maybe you don't have someone special to smooch at midnight, or maybe you actually like staying home to watch the New Year's Rockin' Eve -- just to see how Dick Clark's doing this year. Whatever your excuse, there are tons of shows this weekend besides those blockbuster Saturday night events.
Thursday, Dec. 29, at Jammin' Java, $12
Perhaps to counter all those "Best of 2011" lists that start flooding our RSS feeds as early as November, the duo West Goes East (Mark Williams and Justin Sheehy of Jonasay) is having a CD release show with three days left to go in 2011. Take that, all you rock critics who start talking about the album of the year in March! (Also: What's a CD?) There's still plenty of new music being released even as the year winds down!
Friday, Dec. 30, at the Falls Church VFW, $6
The holidays are a time when we tend to remember others, and a bunch of local metal bands (A Sound of Thunder, Death Penalty, Croatoan, and Incision) have decided to close out this year with a benefit show for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, held at the VFW Hall in Falls Church.
Monday, Jan. 1, at the Fillmore Silver Spring, $35
Here's the bottom line: if you get totally hammered on New Year's Eve, you'll probably be too hung over to go out on Jan. 1, and then you'd miss Wale and Alexandria's Black Cobain at the Fillmore.
Tuesday, Jan. 2, at DC9, FREE
If your New Year's Resolution has anything to do with saving money or sticking to a budget, you can still do that while hearing some great live music. Local Justin Jones (aka the reason that 9:30 Records was started) is performing a few free shows this month at DC9. He does play around town fairly often, but if you see him now, you won't have to worry about that other New Year's Resolution (you know, finally seeing Justin Jones live) for the rest of 2012.
These and other show listings can be found on ShowListDC.
