Fenty-Gray TBD debate: The job cutter gets it right

The animosity between Adrian Fenty and public union employees is well-known. And nothing gets a union angrier than thinning its ranks. But exactly how many public employee positions has Fenty dashed since entering office?

During today's debate on NewsTalk, Fenty said he had cut 2,500 jobs. Is that accurate?

It looks so. From a 2009 Washington Post piece on the mayor's budget proposal (emphasis ours):

In a $5.4 billion spending proposal for fiscal 2010, Fenty (D) laid out a plan to lay off 776 employees and further reduce the workforce through attrition and elimination of vacant jobs. The cuts are spread throughout city agencies, including 250 positions in the public schools, 240 in the mental health department, 138 in public works and 118 in the finance office.

Combined with reductions made last year, the Fenty administration will have cut almost 2,500 city jobs in two years, about 7.5 percent of the city's 32,800-person workforce.

We're looking into if any jobs were cut in this year's District budget, and we'll update this post if we find any information. For now, Fenty earns his second Honest Abe of the day.
