Jack Johnson case: Three defendants plead not guilty in PG County federal corruption probe
The owners of Tick Tock Liquor and Restaurant in Langley Park and a Prince George's County Police officer all pleaded not guilty Tuesday in the latest stage of a federal corruption probe.
Magistrate Judge Jillyn Schulze set a trial date of Jan. 18 for all three defendants.
Amrik Melhi, 51, and his wife Ravinder Melhi, 49, both of Clarksville, and Prince George's County Police Cpl. Chong Chin Kim, 42, of Beltsville, all plead not guilty to a single count of "conspiracy to interfere with commerce by extortion under color of official right."
The case involves smuggling untaxed alcohol and tobacco from Virginia, although prosecutors also alleged at an earlier court hearing that the Melhis bribed Prince George's County officials.
According to an indictment, Kim and another officer, Sgt. Richard Delabrer, 45, provided protection to the Melhis when they transported and sold the goods. Delabrer has already pled not guilty.
Both Kim and Delabrer have been suspended without pay by the department.
Schulze also set a Dec. 10 deadline for lawyers to file motions and a Jan. 12 deadline for jury instructions.
Another defendant in the case, Amir Milijkovic, 39, of Bowie, is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning.
