Diego Blengio stood on the edge of a northern Virginia cul-de-sac Monday afternoon, staring into Silas Burke Park.

"Just wanted to see the last place where he was," Blengio said. "I was here last night too, but the whole place was closed off."

That's because this little patch of land at the edge of this quiet neighborhood in Burke, Va., was where the body of 19-year-old Jahed Ahmad Babi was found Sunday. It was still a crime scene. On Monday, it became a memorial ground.

"He was a good person," Blengio said. "He looked out for all of us. ... He was a good friend."

Babi, who lived not far from where his body was discovered, had a bright smile and sharp mind, his friends said Monday. He came from a good family and he made friends easily.

"In high school there's always different crowds," said Jassim Ibrahimi, a friend of Babi's. "He was cool with everyone. Didn't matter what kind of class they were in, if they were a geek or cool kid. Doesn't matter. He cared about everyone."

Police told the Washington Post that Babi's body was discovered by a passerby. Two sources told the Post that he had been shot. The case is being investigated as a homicide.

"Loving kid. Nice kid," Ibrahimi said. "He wouldn't hurt a fly, you know. He was always there for his friends and he would always help people. ... Even if he didn't know them, he would always be willing to help people. Breaks my heart."

The Fairfax County Police Department has released little information about the case. In a news release, police said Babi suffered "trauma to the upper body." Authorities believe it was an isolated incident.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine a cause of death, though it's not clear when.

"The problem was he was a good guy with the wrong crowd, the wrong kinds of people who dragged him along to the darker side," one friend, Kelly Aranibar, told ABC7.

Fairfax County court records show that a Jahed A. Babi, of Burke, Va., received suspended license following a 2009 possession of marijuana case. It was unclear late Monday night if this was the same Jahed A. Babi, because neither the online court records nor the police news release listed a full birth date for Babi, whose family declined to comment.

On Monday evening, a group of teenagers and young adults gathered for a vigil where Blengio stood hours earlier. They came in jeans and hooded sweatshirts, carrying flowers, candles and pictures. Some stepped forward to tell stories or share memories of Babi.

"Everyone loved him," Ibrahimi said in an interview a few hours earlier, "and he was there for everyone."
