Family and friends on Thursday will gather to remember slain University of Maryland student Justin DeSha-Overcash, who was among those killed during a rash of homicides in Prince George's County this year.

A memorial service is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Memorial Chapel, says university spokesman Neil Tickner. A reception at the Nyumburu Cultural Center will follow.

DeSha-Overcash was killed Jan. 11, his death the 11th recorded in the county in 2011. Authorities initially implied that the 22-year-old's death was because of his involvement with drugs, but DeSha-Overcash's family has pushed back on the characterization.

On Thursday night DeSha-Overcash's family will receive the astronomy degree that he earned, Tickner says. DeSha-Overcash was also majoring in physics, but had not completed all the coursework requirements.
