Man shot and killed in U Street area identified

UPDATE, 10:12 p.m.:  The Metropolitan Police Department has identified the victim in a fatal shooting in the 900 block of Westminster Street NW Monday.

Polie say they found 24-year-old Ronald Johnson of Northeast D.C. suffering from a gunshot wound last night.

They say he was taken to an area hospital before he succumbed to his injuries.

ORIGINAL: Metropolitan Police report a homicide on the 900 block of Westminster Street in the U Street neighborhood of northwest D.C. late Monday.

MPD officers and several U Street area residents reportedly heard gunfire around 11:40 p.m. MPD officers found a man that had been shot around 9th and Westminster NW. The male victim was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

MPD has questioned at least one suspect, but no arrests have been made at this time.

TBD received several reports from Twitter users about gunshots in the area, though the reports differ as to how many shots were fired.

At 11:37 p.m., MattOrtega tweeted, “Just heard about 5 loud gun shots behind my house. Just lovely.”

At 11:39 p.m., BradleyatWork said, “Just heard six gunshots on my street...9 & Westminster....now a bunch of cop cars outside.”

NikolasSchiller tweeted that he heard the shots as well.

“At 11:35, I jumped when four gunshots rang out at the end of the alley between S & Westminster. Someone was shot, neighbor says he was young,” he tweeted.

Maverick1303, who took the photo above, tweeted that he heard seven gunshots in the area. MPD and DC Fire EMS were on the scene by 11:45.

At midnight he tweeted, “Detectives on the scene taking statements from two people who live right near the alley. Seems they saw the gunman(men?) flee.”
