Metro says a man intentionally placed himself on the tracks before being struck by a Red Line train at Metro Center.

It happened around 7:45 p.m. on the Red Line in the direction of Glemont.

A TBD staff member at the scene said people screamed and the train slammed on brakes to a stop halfway into the platform. A few witnesses said someone jumped or fell right in front of it.

Another witness, who was on the train, tweeted, "There was definitely a jolt, some sort of shudder on the train."

D.C. Fire officials say the man was stuck under the train and had to be removed. The Associated Press reports that "both the victim and a bystander trying to help him were under the train."

Metro officials say the man is conscious. Fire officials are transporting him to any area hospital in critical condition.

D.C. Fire reported that EMS were also evaluating the bystander who helped the man. The Associated Press reported that person had "minor injuries."

Metro officials say Red Line trains are not moving through the station. Red Line trains are turning back at Dupont and Judiciary Square.

Orange and Blue Line trains are running through Metro Center.
