A man in his 40's was fatally struck by a freight train in Riverdale Park.

Around 12 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to Queensbury Road and Rhode Island Avenue for a report of a pedestrian struck. Upon arrival, they found a man lying next to the CSX train tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to MARC spokesman John Wesley, the accident occurred in the 5900 block of Lafayette Avenue. The location is close to the Riverdale Station on the Camden Line.

Both sides of the tracks were temporarily closed this morning while police investigated.

It’s not clear how the man got on the tracks or whether this incident will affect service this morning.

No further details were immediately available.
