Do you have what it takes to be crowned King or Queen of Columbia Heights?

The 4th Annual Columbia Heights Day festival is all set for Sat., Aug. 28, and organizer Liz Bartolomeo was kind enough to give TBD a preview of this year's most notable addition: a pair of pageants that will choose, high school prom-style, a "royal" couple to represent the neighborhood.

Eight men and eight women will each have a chance to compete for those crowns, but first they'll have to successfully navigate a trio of challenges. The first round will pit contestants against each other in a measure of their knowledge of Columbia Heights and general D.C. trivia. Next up will be a spelling bee-style round involving neighborhood names and landmarks. And finally, contestants will have to demonstrate some kind of "talent." Scare quotes intentionally used there, as the Columbia Heights Day Initiative has a rather loose definition of exactly what talents they expect to see on display on the big stage.

"It may just end up being something like silly costumes," says Bartolomeo, who sheepishly admits that the concept behind the pageant is "a little bit hipsterish." And heads up to any politicians looking to secure that coveted hipster vote: the festival is still working on lining up a public official to serve as one of the judges.

Sign-ups for the Columbia Heights Day pageants are open until Wednesday, Aug. 25. Email CHMonarchy@gmail.com with your name and contact information.

A full schedule of events for Columbia Heights Day can be found here. Food truck fans will want to head straight to the 1100 block of Kenyon Street NW, where more than half a dozen trucks, including DC Slices, Pleasant Pops, Sauca, Smokin' BBQ, Sweetflow Mobile and Curbside Cupcakes will set up shop during the festival.
