More proof that Arlington loves its farmers markets: the Crystal City farmers market has been a hit in its first year of being run by Freshfarm Markets, according to the nonprofit. Freshfarm took over management of the market at the request of the Crystal City Business Improvement District, who ran it last year. It's also the group's first market in Virginia.

An average of 3,400 people passed through the market per day in July, according to Freshfarm spokesperson Ann Yonkers. The market is on Tuesdays between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., and has the benefit of business from both those who work and those who live in Crystal City on their ways home, she says.

Those numbers are high for a weekday market. Compare it to the White House farmers market that Freshfarm launched last year. The number of customers at that Thursday night market averages about 1,300. The Dupont Circle market pulls in about 4,500 to 5,000 people on the weekends.

"We've seen very nice traffic, there's lot of satisfaction, and there has been lots of interest in the chef's events and other things we've done there," Yonkers says.
