UPDATE 2:55 p.m.: Officials say the smoke is coming from an underground electrical transformer that continues to burn. Fire crews are standing by waiting for Pepco to respond to the scene. Connecticut Ave. is now closed in both directions in the vicinity of T Street and Florida Ave. NW.

D.C. Fire/EMS crews have responded to reports of heavy smoke and a possible electrical fire at 1875 Connecticut Ave. NW. Department spokesperson Pete Piringer says additional units have been requested to the scene.

Witnesses say the building has been evacuated. T Street NW is currently closed between Connecticut and Florida. Fire crews are staging all around the building, but so far both Connecticut and Florida remain open to traffic. Still, best to avoid the area for the time being.

Prince of Petworth has posted some reader video showing what sound like little explosions related to the fire.
