CORRECTION: The original version of this story misstated the final location of the car involved in this collision. The car actually traveled straight through the intersection of Fairfax and Glebe before it pulled over.
The driver of an out-of-service Metrobus hit a car and then left the scene of the accident in Arlington this afternoon, according to an eyewitness.
ARLNow.com has more information from the drivers of the car.
The three occupants of the car that was hit and another witness told police that a Metrobus rear-ended a car at the intersection of Fairfax Drive and Glebe Road, then fled the scene by making an illegal right turn from the main travel lanes of Fairfax onto Glebe.
Jeffrey Nichols-Haining, the driver of the car, says the light had just turned green when he saw the bus barreling toward him.
“I did see it [coming] in my rear view mirror… I mumbled [expletive] then got hit,” he said.
Arlington resident Matt Gilkeson saw the Metrobus hit a black Ford Escort at the intersection of North Glebe Road and Fairfax Drive a few minutes after 1 p.m. today, he says.
Gilkeson was on North Glebe waiting to make a left when he heard "a hard impact, crash crunch" noise. He saw that a Metrobus and the black Escort had been in an accident on Fairfax.
"They kind of slowly moved forward, and the bus driver made some signal, so I figured he was trying to pull forward through the intersection," Gilkeson said.
The black car was traveling west on Fairfax Drive in the left lane, and turned left, went though the intersection and stopped on the other side of Glebe. The bus, however, turned right onto North Glebe from the center lane and drove away.
Gilkeson then turned left, pulled over and called the police.
Arlington County police are now investigating the incident.
A spokesperson for WMATA said that the driver of the Metrobus did not report the incident. The driver has since been put on three days of leave pending an investigation, and will undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing, per WMATA policy.
