Bicycle commuters of D.C., say it with me now: Hallelujah!

The District Department of Transportation has just completed installing a series of contra-flow bike lanes at the famously confusing intersection of 16th Street, U Street, and New Hampshire Ave. NW.

This particular intersection has been the scene of a number of D.C. police stings over the last few years, ensnaring cyclists who deigned to pedal the wrong way down those suddenly one-way blocks of New Hampshire that flow in opposite directions facing U (and you thought jaywalking stings were bad).

As the WashCycle excitedly notes, along with the new lanes, DDOT has included bicycle-only traffic signals to help cyclists pass through the intersection more safely. Plus they've also installed "bike boxes" (check out an image of the new signs explaining them here) on each side, designed to separate cyclists more clearly from automobile traffic. Pretty nifty.

Have you had a chance to try out the new lanes yet? Make sure to let us know how well they work for you.

In the age of oil spills and an obesity epidemic, using transportation that does not burn fossil fuels, but does burn calories should be encouraged. How can we afford not to?

How is it that we can afford to spend so much on a mode of transportation which serves only one person and provides $0 for the upkeep of our streets?
