Early morning bike commuters along the Custis Trail should expect barriers blocking the trail around the Interstate-66 overpass near Bon Air Park until about 7 a.m. for the rest of the work week.

The section of the trail will close overnight this week to allow for construction of a protective barrier needed to protect bicyclists during the upcoming widening of the overpass. ARLNow has a handy map of the closure.

Arlington County originally estimated that the section of trail would be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., August 23-26, but county's trails manager said today that barriers will not be removed from the trail until about 7 a.m. The detour will take trail users over the bike/pedestrian crossover bridge a few hundred yards east of the underpass, according to BikeArlington marketing manager Tim Kelley.

It's the second time this month bikers have had to look out on the Custis Trail. Earlier in August, the county repaired a sink hole that had been covered by a metal plate on the trail. The metal plate is now gone and the hole filled in and paved over.
