A suspicious package led to the brief evacuation of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building shortly after 8 a.m. this morning.

Several blocks along 17th street NW, between D and H streets, were closed during the investigation.

D.C. Fire/EMS spokesperson Pete Piringer said the U.S. Secret Service evacuated the building, located on 17th Street near Pennsylvania Ave NW, even before fire crews arrived on the scene.

"They cleared it pretty quickly," Piringer said. "Within minutes of us getting there they were able to identify the package ... there was no hazard."

It's unclear at this hour what the nature of the package was, but Piringer said it was apparently something that was mailed to the executive branch office building that was not expected.
