We've been getting questions about it, so here's your answer: A stretch of 16th Street NW north of Oak Street was closed this morning due to a bizarre overnight incident involving three scooters and four cars that were damaged by fire.

According to police and WJLA reports, units arrived in the 3600 block of 16th Street NW at approximately 4 a.m. for a report of an auto fire. In front of 3620 16th St. NW, firefighters discovered three scooters tied to a tree that were fully engulfed. That blaze was under control within about 15-20 minutes, but then! A short time later, firefighters were called back to the same spot, this time finding two cars completely on fire, with extension to two other nearby cars.

The nature of these fires being pretty clearly suspicious, police and fire investigators remained on the scene this morning, causing a nightmarish traffic situation in the area.  The street only reopened at about 8:30 a.m., according to DDOT, and traffic, including Metrobuses, were forced to detour onto 14th Street.
