Rough map of coverage area for free Bloomingdale Wi-Fi plan
ANC 5C04 commissioner John Salatti sent over this map of the plans for the free wireless Internet project that's in the works in the Bloomingdale area. The map comes with a couple of clarifications and qualifications.
For one, it was made two years ago, back when the concept was something closer to fantasy. So it's "aspirational both in terms of the geographic scope of the project and the placement of the equipment," Salatti notes. The location of some of the antennas depicted here have already changed somewhat since the map was made, Salatti says.
Second, Salatti wanted a clarify that the idea for what's been dubbed "The Bridge" originated with ANC 5C03 commissioner and Big Bear Cafe owner Stuart Davenport, not with Salatti. Salatti says he came on board to move the project forward two years ago, and that he subsequently brought D.C.'s Office of the Chief Technology Officer to the table this past spring.
As you can see, the plans call for a coverage area that encompasses more than just the center of Bloomingdale. A good chunk of Eckington, a portion of Truxton Circle, and a slice of LeDroit Park would theoretically also be included.
There's still a lot that's unclear about how and when this network will go up, and who's going to pay for it. The team behind "The Bridge" has recently brought on Jamie Triplin-Hines to act as spokesperson, but she's still getting up to speed and hasn't been able to tell me much more so far. The cost of the equipment may be being paid for by OCTO, but given where the department's project managers say the plans are to date (still in the preliminary stages), they don't have many more details to share.
