The sidewalks around the Discovery building on Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road have now cleared for pedestrians to walk by. Police tape still prevents access to the Georgia and Wayne avenues side of the property, and private cleaning crews were busy cleaning up the crime scene.

The sidewalks opened at about 11 a.m., a police official on the scene said.

Discovery employees have slowly been making their way back to their offices to retrieve car keys and other items they left behind. Employees are entering the lobby on the corner of Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue and have to present a photo I.D. to get past the entrance.

Discovery Communications' media coordinator Amilla Bonay says tomorrow is a liberal-leave day, meaning employees can come if they want, but they are able to take off until after Labor Day. About 1,900 to 2,100 Discovery employees work in the building, and it seems as if most are coming back to the building today, Bonay says.

Meanwhile, just a few miles up Georgia Avenue, police and FBI wrapped up an investigation at suspected gunman James J. Lee's Wheaton home.

Tim Grahl lives directly across the street from where Lee lived. He said Lee has only lived there for a few months, and the other two roommates in the rental home were a young, friendly couple in their 30s.

Grahl says the thing that stood out about Lee was that in this friendly neighborhood, he mostly kept to himself.

"When I saw him walking out the house, it wasn't like he'd throw up his hand and say, 'Hi, how you doing?'" Grahl says. "He was just by himself, in his emotions. When I saw him, he wasn't really interested in socializing."

Lee usually was in his own world, and Grahl usually saw Lee wearing a simple black hat and a navy blue worker's one-piece jumpsuit, exiting the house and walking toward the Wheaton Metro station.
