Remember the suspected Pepco impersonator we told you about on Tuesday? Well forget everything we said. Err, sort of.

Turns out, according to the results of an internal Pepco investigation, the man identified by a reader of neighborhood blog Life on the Edgewood is actually a legitimate Pepco technician. He's a relatively new hire, according to spokesperson Andre Francis, but he should have had the following two things with him when he approached the resident in question: a temporary ID badge of his own, and an escort in the form of a veteran Pepco employee who was supposed to be training him. Francis says the power company is still looking into why the newish tech was flying solo, and whether or not he had been issued any form of ID.

"We tell customers to ask for proper company ID, and if they don't have that ... I'll say that I wouldn't allow anyone without ID to come into my home," Francis says. "So I stand by that statement. We are working to see how we can prevent this from happening again."

So, to recap: An Edgewood resident alerted a local blog that a seemingly shady, possible Pepco impostor asked to come inside his home. After being made aware of the man's description (orange shirt with fake-looking logo, no official vehicle) and his inability to provide ID, Pepco agreed this sounded like a scam (not to mention, things like this have happened before). Later, Pepco walked that back a bit, saying that they do in fact have techs working for them who wear orange or brown shirts, and some of them do drive personal vehicles. And now, they've confirmed this guy actually does work for them, so it looks like what we're talking about here is a rookie employee who was, at a minimum, poorly prepared to be out in the field.

Pepco continues to recommend that customers always ask anyone purporting to work for them for ID. Now, we suppose, they just need to make sure all their employees actually have said ID.
