Arlington board asked the former county manager to resign
Former Arlington County Manager Michael Brown resigned after he was asked to leave by the county board, Board Chairman Jay Fisette told the Arlington Democratic Committee last night. Fisette didn't let on why the board was unhappy with Brown's performance, however.
A video of Fisette's comments was originally posted by ARLNow.
Brown submitted his resignation citing the health of his wife as the cause Sept. 30. The board appointed Deputy County Manager Barbara Donnellan in his place at a special meeting Oct. 1.
Fisette said that he felt the board should clarify after members of the public had raised questions about Brown's $110,000 severance payment.
"When the board determined that Mr. Brown’s fit with our organization was not what we hoped for, he was given the opportunity to submit his official resignation," Fisette said. "Mr. Brown’s severance payment was fully consistent with the terms of his contract. It was not discretionary."
Fisette did not speak to the reasons why the board deemed that Brown was "not a good fit" with Arlington, but we'll update this story as we know more, saying, "we all wish Mr. Brown well."
He also lauded new County Manager Barbara Donnellan. "She's beloved but she's also very talented, and we're very fortunate to have her at the helm."

$110,000 severance for someone who only spent 6 months on the job? Wow.
