It'll be hard to miss events for this Sunday's Marine Corps Marathon if you're in or around Rosslyn or Crystal City, but in case you're planning to come in from elsewhere in Arlington for the event, here's a roundup of what's happening, and what roads will be closed.
The marathon starts and ends in Arlington: the beginning is on Route 110 near Arlington National Cemetery and the end is near the Iwo Jima Memorial. Rosslyn is planning its annual "finish festival," as well as events throughout the day.
Crystal City's also getting in on the marathon festivities by hosting a "kid-tastic" festival near miles 22 and 23 of the marathon, right by the Crystal City Metro station.
More info on events, and Arlington road closures, after the jump.
From 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Crystal City BID will have moon bounces, face painting, and special programs for kids at South 18th Street and Crystal Drive. Kids will also be able to participate in the kickoff of the Crystal City installment of ArtJamz with KidJamz, which provides paper and other supplies for kid artists to create their own works of art.
The National Children's Museum will also be leading some programming, and we hear there will be special appearances by Elmo and Cookie Monster as well.
Over in Rosslyn, DJ Rob Powers will be leading the "finish festival" hosted by the Rosslyn BID and Rosslyn Renaissance by playing music, interviewing racers, and handing out freebies. Food vendors, including Ben and Jerry's, Chop't, Margaret Soul Food and others, will be selling food to the hordes of both participants and observers.
Rosslyn's also excited to offer scenes from the rest of the race on the two-story projection wall in Artisphere this year, according to Rosslyn BID spokesperson Monique O'Grady. A live feed of photos from various mile markers throughout the course will be projected throughout the day.
Now, all of this will lead to substantial road closures throughout the area, the biggest of which are Route 110 North and South all day (from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m.) Wilson Boulevard in Rosslyn (east of North Nash Street from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m.), Key Bridge (from 7:30 a.m. to noon), eastbound Washington Boulevard (4 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and basically all of Crystal Drive (from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
There's many more closures, though, so for the definitive list of Arlington road closures, check out Arlington County Police's alert for this weekend.
