Residents should still avoid contact with the water in Long Branch Creek and Four Mile Run from Glencarlyn Park to the Potomac after last week's sewage leak, according to Arlington County officials.

The county discovered a break in a sewer line on county parkland Friday evening near the Long Branch Nature Center on South Carlin Springs Road. Tree roots had broken the line, and the leak was repaired by early Saturday morning. Crews were back out at the site this morning trimming additional tree roots, according to Water, Sewage and Street Division director Bob Pace.

Part of the pipe will likely have to be re-lined after the break, Pace says. The water advisory will likely remain in effect until sometime this weekend, in order to "allow the contamination to work its way out," he says. In the meantime, people should avoid contact with the waters in the streams, and keep pets from swimming in or drinking the water in these areas.
