Arlington County board member Chris Zimmerman will take the chair's seat in 2011.

County board member Chris Zimmerman will take over as the chairman of the Arlington County Board come January, current chairman Jay Fisette said Dec. 14. The announcement came as Zimmerman was sworn in for the fifth time as a board member, after winning re-election in a landslide in November.

Board member Mary Hynes will serve as vice chair. Both will take their seats at the board's annual Jan. 1 organizational meeting.

Zimmerman was first elected to the county board in 1996, and re-elected in 1998, 2002, and 2006, serving as chairman each of those years. He'll outline his priorities for 2011 at the Jan. 1 meeting.

Outgoing chair Fisette provided his end-of-year wrap up at the Dec. 14 board meeting, highlighting 2010 accomplishments: more than five miles of new bike lanes, work toward a Community Energy Plan, and completion of the the Natural Resources Management Plan and the Crystal City Sector Plan. He also owned up to his own personal accomplishment: he biked to work 44 times in 2010, after having pledged to bike an average of once per week.
