The Meade Street bridge connecting downtown Rosslyn to the Iwo Jima Memorial is slated for some improvements, but another tourist season will likely come and go before changes are implemented.
Arlington County is undertaking the Meade Street Bridge Alternatives study to examine how to improve pedestrian safety, bicycle access, ADA compliance, lighting, and other factors. Recommendations are expected to be complete in the summer of 2011, and the county would begin implementation after the plan is finished.
Neighbors that use the bridge frequently had a number of suggestions for county staff members last night. Neighborhood blog Ode Street Tribune has a full report here, but comments ranged from improving signs showing tourists how to get to the memorial and widening sidewalks to changing the "ugly" fence on the bridge and keeping the transition from more urban Rosslyn to the more residential and open space area near the memorial.
The county is accepting comments on the bridge for the next few weeks. Information is here, or email email@example.com with comments.
