Fatal Adelphi hit and run update: Not one but TWO drivers know what happened, remain silent

- Where Cubias-Rivera was hit by a car and killed on Aug. 22. (TBD)
A few weeks ago we interviewed cyclist Keith Krombel about the hit-and-run crash that hospitalized him for ten days and put him in a wheelchair for four weeks. We asked Krombel how it felt to know that a stranger had left him for dead on the side of the road. "It kind of shakes your faith in people and how they behave," he responded.
Then what do we make of the case of Jose Daniel Cubias-Rivera?
A little over a week ago, Cubias-Rivera was hit by a car and killed on University Boulevard in Adelphi, Md. He was 40 years old and apparently homeless. The driver didn't stop.
Now Prince George's County police are saying that a second driver was involved in the crash and fled the scene as well.
Police spokesman Ofc. Evan Baxter says Cubias-Rivera was crossing University Blvd. near 23rd Avenue when he was hit by a yellow Ford Crown Victoria taxicab, possibly damaging the front-left turn signal. That driver kept going. The impact threw Cubias-River into the next lane over, where he was hit by a second car, perhaps a dark-colored four-door Toyota Camry. That driver also kept going.
"He may well have been laying flat on the ground when the second vehicle struck him," says Baxter, "but... even if he was laying in the road you would know that you hit someone."
Shame must be easier to bear when there's another driver to share the load.
Anyone who knows anything about the crash should call Prince George's police at 301-306-5640.
