Not long ago, Unsuck DC Metro took the agency to task for not having cameras that could record driver behavior on buses. Metro just announced that that policy will soon change. According to a press release today, "Metro has begun to install new cameras on its fleet of 1,500 buses to assist with improving Metrobus safety by documenting incidents and assisting operators to develop safer, more efficient driving habits."

Most of the cameras now on buses record only passenger areas. The new cameras, known as DriveCam, will apparently be trained specifically on drivers. They'll capture both video and audio and "detect when an operator makes a defensive move to avoid an accident, brakes or accelerates suddenly, turns sharply, or is involved in an incident."

Taken together, the data should tell Metro quite a bit about driver behavior. But we're even more interested to see what kind of role the footage will play in future Metro-related lawsuits.
