A pedestrian was hit by a car and killed last night on University Boulevard in Adelphi, Md. The driver didn’t see fit to stick around.
Prince George’s County Police spokesman Cpl. Mike Rodriguez says officers responded to a call at 8:49 p.m. reporting a man lying unconscious in the westbound lane of University near 23rd Avenue. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.
There was one witness who apparently saw the collision and got a look at the car, though probably not a good one. “It’s possibly a dark-colored Camry,” says Rodriguez. Police did an on-scene investigation last night. “Hopefully with [crash] reconstruction we’ll get some more information.”
Sadly, the victim isn’t a known party, either. “He hasn’t been ID’d yet,” says Rodriguez. All they have to share at this point is that he appears to be Hispanic. Police are running a fingerprint check on him, which will probably only turn up a hit if the man had been booked at some point.
This morning we headed out to the scene. It’s part of a long and uninviting stretch of six-lane University Blvd., near a pair of dollar stores and a couple of gas stations. The attendants said they hadn’t heard anything about the collision, but a woman waiting at the bus stop said last night police had cordoned off a crash site in the middle of the road a good ways away from 23rd Ave. (Note: Police are calling this Adelphi, but Google Maps says we're in Hyattsville.)
The area is home to a lot of Latino immigrants, many of whom don’t have cars and rely on the buses running along University. There’s a crosswalk at 23rd Ave., but the next one is a half-mile up the street and several bus stops away, by our calculation. As a result, you have a lot of people trying to cross over three high-speed lanes, a grass median, and another three high-speed lanes, often in hopes of reaching the bus stop just across the street. We watched a half-dozen people do that this very morning (see photo above).
We don’t know the circumstances of this hit-and-run, but we do know that this is an awfully inhospitable place for someone without a car. We’ll be updating as we learn more.
