This morning the woman who allegedly killed a pedestrian while driving drunk near Dupont Circle on Oct. 7 appeared before a D.C. judge for a hearing on her voluntary manslaughter case.
Earlier this month, Jorida Davidson, a 30-year-old Chevy Chase, Md., resident and Albanian national, pleaded not guilty to the charge that she acted with a "conscious disregard" in the death of Kiela Marie Ryan, 24, of Columbia, Md. Police allege that Davidson struck Ryan, who was getting out of her car, with her SUV, sending her through the air and into the back of another car. Ryan died later that morning.
The hearing this morning was to determine whether there was enough evidence against Davidson to warrant a trial. Davidson, who appeared in a black suit and was accompanied by her husband and other family members, waived her right to the hearing, essentially admitting there was probably cause for the case. The next hearing is set for Jan. 5.
According to court documents, Davidson fled the scene of the crash, but a witness was able to pursue the car on his bicycle and take down the SUV's tag. Police traced it to Davidson's Chevy Chase apartment, where they apparently found her passed out in the vehicle inside the garage.
As part of the conditions of her release, Davidson must wear a GPS tracking device and undergo "intense" supervision. At today's hearing she was admonished for violating the orders of her release for a 90-minute "unauthorized exit" from her home. According to Davidson's lawyer, Davidson had accompanied her mother to the airport in a trip that went beyond curfew. Her lawyer called the trip a "family tradition."
"Traditions, you forgetting -- they don't trump my orders," the Hon. Lynn Leibovitz told Davidson. "You're under high-intensity supervision. The requirements of that program are very strict, and if you don't follow them I'll ask why... I shouldn't send you to the [D.C.] jail."
Because of the violation, Davidson's curfew has been changed from 10 p.m. to 8 p.m.
John Ryan, Kiela's father, declined to comment on the case after the hearing.
