The D.C. Bill of Rights Coalition and the Montgomery County Civil Rights Coalition posted the online petition today. By signing (digitally) you subscribe to the belief that "random bag searches" on Metro are "unconstitutional, ineffective and misguided," and that Metro should "immediately discontinue" the policy. (Note: Metro has insisted these are bag screenings; bags won't be opened after being swabbed for explosives unless screeners feel there's a need for further inspection.)

In a release, Montgomery County Coalition member Thomas Nephew said, "The online petition is just the first step in what is sure to be a vigorous campaign against a program that treats metro riders like criminal suspects and tramples on one of our most cherished liberties and constitutional rights."

Expect some more of this once the screenings get underway.
