Direct heckling (and praise?) to Metro's new Twitter handle now

Last week I reported that Metro would be changing its Twitter handle from @MetroOpensDoors to @WMATA. Well, the moment has finally arrived. If you followed @MetroOpensDoors, you should already be following the new account. WMATA seems to have swapped the names of the regular account, sporting 13,000 followers, with the protected placeholder account, sporting fewer than 50 followers, the organization had been using to save the @WMATA name. And welcome to Metro's new social media manager Brian Anderson! He's supposed to be starting this week.
Good morning everyone. @metroopensdoors is now @wmata.
Enjoy and make sure you use those extra few characters when tweeting at Metro. Although @MetroOpensDoors had its own zippy flair, the change is a good one, especially given the value of a few letters on Twitter. My real question — will the name official Twitter handle change how people hashtag their transit-related content on Twitter? The tag-of-choice for Metro news, whether complaints or praise, has been #WMATA. People could just as easily mention Metro itself with an @ symbol now. Is the #WMATA hashtag about to die?
