Washington isn’t known for much, food-wise. Our best argument for a native dish, the half-smoke, is a slightly spicier Polish sausage (and if you buy one from a hot-dog cart, it may not even be spicy).

Mambo sauce, which carryouts will put on fried items on request, is a slightly sweeter sweet and sour sauce. Some places will mix tartar and hot sauce on your fried-fish sandwich, but calling that a local delicacy is grasping at straws.

That’s not to say there’s no good food in D.C. — quite the opposite, especially in the last few years. Whether it’s poutine from a truck, the titular sandwich at Ray’s Hell Burger in Arlington, or the kung pao chicken at the Source, you can eat very well in the nation’s capital. And if you have time, try to explore the suburbs, where pockets of immigrants from Latin America and Asia are quietly making pho and Peruvian chicken the signature dishes D.C. so lacks. Here are some listings within a reasonable walking distance of the Mall.

Friday’s the perfect opportunity to track down one (or two) of the many gourmet food trucks rolling around the city (check their Twitter feeds for each day’s location).
