The Redskins' bubble players got their final opportunities to prove themselves to their coaches. Some delivered with strong play, some struggled, and others had a mix of both good and bad in the 20-10 loss to the hosting Arizona Cardinals.
Shining on the night was rookie wide receiver Terrence Austin, who had five catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. Austin previously had been used mostly on special teams in the first three preseason games. But Thursday night, Redskins coaches gave him an extended look at receiver.
Meanwhile, one of the players battling with Austin for a roster spot was Brandon Banks, who after returning a kick 40 yards early in the game, fumbled a punt return for the second straight week and now has three fumbles in the preseason.
Solid was fellow receiver Devin Thomas, who after seeing his share of ups and downs this preseason had four catches for 34 yards and averaged 27 yards on four kick returns.
Running back Willie Parker got the start after struggling last week and rushed for 35 yards on seven plays.
The cast of second- and third-string linemen, who got extensive playing time while trying to make the 53-man cut all struggled for the most part.
Defensively, all eyes were on Albert Haynesworth. The big fella was expected to get significant playing time this week, but few thought he would play the entire game.
Haynesworth played 49 of 55 possible defensive snaps, but his body of work was one of mixed reviews. Haynesworth applied some pressure early on and showed good pursuit on a couple of plays, but he got blown off the ball other times, and then some snaps didn't look to give the most effort.
A bright spot on defense was linebacker Robert Henson, who was all over the place, making plays in the first half. Henson had five solo tackles, two assists and a sack. But then in the second half, he went down with a knee injury and had to be helped off the field.
Cornerback Justin Tryon had an interception late in the game and sprinkled some nice tackles throughout the game, but did struggle in coverage at times. His fellow cornerbacks Byron Westbrook and Ramzee Robinson struggled at times as well, however.
It'll be interesting to see how things shake out with player evaluation and cuts on Saturday . . . .
