The Washington Redskins have the day off today, but you didn't really think a day would pass without some sort of Albert Haynesworth development, did you?

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that at some point this past weekend, the Redskins and Tennessee Titans engaged in talks about trading the disgruntled defensive lineman back to his former team.

This would be the second occasion on which the two teams have engaged in discussions about a deal for Haynesworth. Earlier this offseason, the teams held negotiations, but nothing materialized because the Redskins reportedly wanted more in return than the Titans were willing ot give up.

Mortensen reports that no deal is imminent at this time.

So far, my attempts to get some sort of confirmation one way or the other from the Redskins have been unsuccessful, but I'll keep banging away.

This is only the latest episode in a seemingly never-ending saga between Mike Shanahan, the Redskins and Haynesworth.

After Haynesworth put on yet another subpar performance in the preseason finale against Arizona, The Washington Post reported that coaches were so upset with Haynesworth that his status for Sunday's season opener against Dallas was in doubt.

But yesterday two insiders told TBD.com that it was their understanding that such reports were overblown, and that they fully expected Haynesworth to play.

And after Monday's practice, Shanahan said Haynesworth "did a good job" against Arizona "despite making a few mistakes," but he passed off those struggles as natural considering Haynesworth is still learning two positions in a new system. Shanahan also implied that he expected to use Haynesworth on Sunday.

However, a deal that would rid the Redskins of Haynesworth wouldn't come as a surprise at all given the seemingly constant turmoil surrounding him. And you know the old saying, "where there's smoke, there's fire," right?

When he plays at a high level, the two-time Pro Bowl player terrorizes opposing offensive lines and commands double-teams that free up teammates to make plays. But the sentiments from within the Redskins' locker room is that the defense can be dominant with or without Haynesworth.

"We've got good defensive tackles who are out there and making plays and getting the job done," cornerback Carlos Rogers said. "If he's out there and makes a tackle and they say his name, then I know he's out there. But other than that, I don't notice. ... He's been in some times, he's been out some times, because they've been having their differences, but I think either way our defense has been doing a stand-up job."

Said linebacker Andre Carter: "If everybody plays well, we have a great chance of winning, not just Albert. It's getting old ... I understand, high-paid player and the outside perspective. But if a guy doesn't play, life goes on. It's the coaches decision."
