Shanahan says Redskins did nothing wrong in late-preseason trades, cuts

Although a pair of trades last week between the Washington Redskins and St. Louis Rams have drawn scrutiny from the NFL players union, Mike Shanahan says no wrong-doing was involved.

The Redskins sent an undisclosed draft pick to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for rookie linebacker Hall Davis. The Rams also sent an undisclosed draft pick to the Redskins in exchange for rookie fullback/tight end Dennis Morris.

A day after the trade, Washington released Hall, whom St. Louis drafted in the fifth round last April.

Alarm was raised that the Redskins and Rams had pulled off the deals and then cut the players for financial reasons. (The collective bargaining agreement states that in an uncapped year, if a team ends up releasing a rookie that they drafted, the team has to pay 85 percent of the player's salary into a rookie pool. But a team doesn't have to do so if the player is traded to another team.)

The Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals pulled off similar deals and also are under examination from the players union.

Shanahan shot down the allegations that his team and the Rams made the moves because of the financial loop-hole.

"No," Shanahan said when asked about the issue following Monday's practice. "First of all, [Davis] was a guy that we had as a draftable grade. So we went out and we worked him out, one-on-one. Then we had a full practice and then we had to make a decision. And at that position we had a little depth. But we had good grades on him, so no [saving money] wasn't at all the case."
