It was supposed to happen last week, then Monday, then Tuesday....but today was the big day. The tweet went out around 11 am:

LobstertruckDC: It's Lobster Lunchtime in Washington!! Farragut Square - 17th between K and I street. (why is there no J street) Wahoo!!

It was on.

We've seen how much D.C. loves food - and tweeting about food news. I guess it's no surprise that the long-awaited debut of the Red Hook Lobster truck at Farragut Square today went like gangbusters with a line around the block that went on for hours.

It became a trending topic on Twitter before lunch, with lots of eager eaters snapping twitpics of the line as they waited for their "lobstah" rolls as others ranted from the Internets.

Twitter reports ranged from annoyed to confused to just...hungry:

metrocurean: Looks like people are excited 4 @LobstertruckDC! reader sends crazy pic, says line is longer now: http://yfrog.com/izrp0j

OConnellPostbiz: Holy smokes the line at the Maine Lobster Roll cart in farragut is 112 people long. No joke.

JamesScott2: Waiting an hour for lunch...wish I had that luxury

DCRadioDan: Holy COW the line for @LobstertruckDC wrapping halfway around Farragut square!! I'm going to ME in 2 weeks. Will get lobster faster that way

dcurbandad: Coworkers waited 2 hrs and spent $15 @LobstertruckDC for this..... http://twitpic.com/2g8786

morseln3: Had to bail on @LobstertruckDC. Waited 30 minutes, and another 30 were ahead of me. Next time I'll go at 11:30 and not 12:10! #DCfoodtrucks

The demand for the lobster rolls was so high that the entrepreneurial spirit really seized at least one person. According to WashingTina, "Lobster roll scalper, selling for $20. Jerk."

She told me via DM the scalper was right next to the truck. Crazy!

The reviews?

davecarson: @lobstertruckdc was ok, not stellar, but I'll go again whenever they come back.

DCBrit: @TBD verdict: roll was deliciously buttery, wish for less meat to enjoy the roll w/ each bite, & reduce $$ http://yfrog.com/5mabxoj

keickhoff: @lobstertruckdc makes a mean lobster roll; worth the wait! http://twitpic.com/2g8ca8

sandychoi: Thoroughly enjoyed my lobstah roll lunch at @LobstertruckDC today, despite the loooong wait. May need to get a whoopie pie, too, next time.

colg8smile: @LobstertruckDC the roll was good but not worth the 50 minute wait. Find a way to be more efficient.. Today was not a good day.

WashingTina: Lobster verdict: B- lots of lobstah, not lots of flavah, not worth a 1.5 hr wait or $15. And the lobster scalper should've been punched
