How would you rename your Metro station?

Instead of Navy Yard, how about Nationals Park?

Should U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo just be U Street?

And wouldn't we all be better off if Metro renamed Smithsonian as "Stand Right Walk Left"?

We want to hear your ideas – serious or not – on how Metro stations should be renamed. Give us your thoughts on how the names can be more useful, more accurate, less of a mouthful, or just funnier for locals.

We ask because JDLand reported last week that there will be slashes added to the Navy Yard name. Back in May, Matt Johnson from Greater Greater Washington argued that we should be moving in the other direction, that stations should return to their original 15-character limit.

So leave us a comment with your ideas, or tweet with the #metronames hashtag. We'll be gathering the best suggestions so we can have a new map ready for you next week.

How about dropping the hyphenization + extra names and just going with the first name in the stop name for all of them? It would be simple, and let's face it, most people just refer to it by the first name anyways. No one says, 'Get off at "U Street Cardozo African American Civil War Memorial.' They say, "Get off at "U Street." If a name is taking up that much space on a map, then there's something wrong with the name. Names should be conveniently identifiable, and Metro started a horrible precedent when they kept adding things to the station names. Plus, I don't see the point of completely changing the name of a station that's been around 20+ years. It's one thing to shorten a name to what's easily recognizable, but it's another to change it to something completely different - i.e., "Parker Gray" instead of "Braddock Road."

Woodley Park - Zoo / Adams Morgan should really just be Woodley Park - National Zoo
