D.C. area residents debate the DMV nickname

When TBD got a complaint on Twitter about use of the nickname "DMV" for the D.C. metro area, we wanted to know more. The name refers to District/Maryland/Virginia and, while we didn't invent it, we do hear it from time to time (especially in social media).

We decided to ask our Twitter and Facebook followers what they think of DMV - or whether they think it's actually a nickname at all.

See what they said after the jump.

If you want to add your two cents, please leave a comment or take the poll at the end.

I'm not sure I am qualified to weigh in on this matter.

I've lived in this area since 2004 and I heard it used as soon as I got here by student at Howard University. I love using it because D.C. is a place where the suburbs matter just as much as the District and the suburbs influence the city. Saying "D.C. Metro Area" is too cumbersome. DMV is cool and short and everyone locally knows what you're talking about. I see people online object to the term, but I've never met anyone in real life who cared that much. Plus, no one seems to have a good answer for why they hate DMV. (Or any answer at all.)

As far as the "Hip Hop and Go-Go Scene" the term is here to stay. It has been in full use for several years now. Ask any MCPS high school student, I guarantee you they know what it means.
