The great debate: What do we call this region? (Poll)

We stumbled into a long-running debate this morning when we published a list of "D.C.'s" fanciest grilled cheese sandwiches, including a few in Northern Virginia.

When we mentioned it on Twitter, follower @n0rbert objected to using D.C. as a label for anything outside the boundaries of the District itself. We suggested putting it to a vote.

Is "DC" just D.C.? Or does it cover this whole region? And if not, what do you call this sprawling metro area? Weigh in with the quick poll below, and then see full results.

See full results.

How am I to respond to this poll when they've excluded "DC area" from the list of regional names?

the dmv is a place most people hate having to go to. why would i call the place i live and work the dmv if i'm lucky enough to not be an employee of the dept of motor vehicles? i live in arlington and work in northeast. if i'm elsewhere in the country and say i'm from "virginia," people unfamiliar with the region think i must raise cattle. (i live practically spitting distance from the pentagon.) i was born in the district and grew up in northern virginia, but i've lived in several other cities as an adult before returning. this will always be "dc" or the "dc metro area" as far as i'm concerned. if i'm going into the city, i usually refer to it as "the district."

My personal definitions: When talking about this region to people who don't live in the area... everything in and immediately around the beltway is "DC." To those who are in the area everything gets their actual name. If the conversation with aforementioned outsider reaches into the geography or further details of the region, they get a proper breakdown of every area with the District of Columbia acting as the relational landmark.
