Do's and Don'ts:

Do's: If needed, ask them to think about it and check back later.

Be open to discussing other topics that may come up, like living wills.

Offer to collect information and assist in making choices.

Don'ts: Don't force the issue.

Don't be afraid of asking specific questions - it is likely they have already been thinking about this.

Say This:

I love you and I want to make sure I know what your wishes are if something happens to one of you. That way I can help make sure you have what you want. Have you thought about how you want to be remembered? Can you tell me what you want to happen to your body after you die?

I said to mine: Here is my Will. Here is my Directive to Physicians. Here is my trust. And here is a list of my personal preferences all in one envelope. Then I explained everything.

My mom then explained everything she wanted and I told her to write it down so I could honor her wishes if she went on before me.

My dad said he wouldn't be living on earth, or in his body anymore at that point and that the living should decide what was best for them to do in the way of services. He did say he liked the son "Danny Boy"
