Do's and Don'ts:

Offer a rational explanation. If that fails then just say,

Say This:

I would just make up any story. Better to hurt their feelings, than for someone else to get hurt. My father-in-law really needed to have his keys taken away, but my mother-in-law was too weak to do it. He drove the car into their livingroom one night and wrecked the house.

I had to take my mother in laws keys away after she passed a school bus and said she did not even see it. As a mother of 5 I informed her that if she wanted to do something that involved just herself- go ahead but when she was putting EVERY life on that school bus in danger I HAD to step in. My husband at the time said he could not do it because it was his mother. I could because it involved other people's safety. I even called the DMV to ask them NOT to issue her a license but they did it anyway. This woman would only make right hand turns and would not drive over 8 miles an hour. After I took her keys she kept saying that she was "Better" She asked for her keys for several months but she finally stopped.

I finally had to place her in an Assisted Living Apartment. It was really nice because they had something going on ALL the time. They could cook in their apmt or they could eat in the main hall. They even drove them to their doctors appointments. It was a Godsend.
