Do's and Don'ts:

Do stay calm and approach your children with compassion and love.

Do take this as an opportunity to teach your children about death as a natural process.

Do not be overly optimistic if your dad is dying.

Do prepare your kids for the change in your dad.

Say This:

Kids, grandpa had a big stroke. It has made it difficult for him to speak and move his left side. He is really sick right now. The doctors have told me that sometimes people can recover from a stroke like this. However, when people are as old as grandpa, sometimes they don't recover and they may even die. No matter how sick grandpa is, he is still the same grandpa that loves you and cares about you. He may not be able to tell you that himself.
