Say This:

Tell him you want to spend more time with him and one idea you have is that you would like to drive him everywhere he wants to go.

This is not always the best approach of in my professional experience of working with older adults. It can come across as insincere and it may cause extreme burnout on the part of the adult child, particularly if they are working or raising their own family.

Wait a minute you would knock this very good idea and NOT give an alternative suggestion. I whole hardly disagree with you. Most people that have difficulty driving have other problems as well, including dementia. And with dementia, pretty much anything anyone says is reason to be defensive.

I think that one of the biggest problems with people taking the keys away and requesting that the elderly person stop driving; is that they don't usually offer providing transportation to the person. So I applaud Mick Quinn for his suggestion.
