What would you say in this situation?
I'm a mom who has been out of the workforce for some time. I need to tell a potential employer that I'm still an asset.

Do's and Don'ts:

Show that your ideas for the firm are current and relevant.

Don't assume that all your experience and education still apply.

Research on current business trends and language so you can "talk the talk."

Invest in professional development during the down-time to sharpen your skills, including continuing education classes and other workshops.

Talk to people in the fields/industry you are interested in prior to approaching a firm.

Understand it may take a few months to land that great position.

Say This:

"Your firm has been high on my target list for some time. I'm especially impressed with your new (x) product offering. I believe it's perfectly positioned for the 35 to 52-year-old demographic and should give you a competitive advantage vs. ABC Company. Have you considered adding a 24/7, online consulting service to support the product? I have been working on that kind of program over the last year or so that could easily be customized for your firm. May I draw it out on the white board?

Finally, the work I did in the last couple years organizing events for volunteer and community groups, including fund raising, have kept my skills sharp. I am jazzed about getting started with you."
