Local golf course can't wait to use ozone-depleting pesticide
In 2005, the Environmental Protection Agency banned the manufacture of methyl bromide, a highly toxic, ozone-depleting pesticide. It's use by golf courses, however, won't become illegal until 2013, which is why the Chevy Chase Club is hurrying to use every last drop of this horrific chemical before it's too late.

If you're tempted to start walking around in some nice wading boots, don't. What's in that water is worse than you could ever imagine.

This video of cheetah cubs will thaw your cold dead heart
When you've already published a gallery of small, somewhat ugly mammals posing in miniature beach scenes, there's not much farther you can fall, journalistically speaking. And with that, I present this video of cheetah cubs running, jumping, climbing, licking, and generally doing what cheetah cubs do, which is to be adorable while learning essential hunting skills that, in this case, will be of no use to them. Because they're in a zoo. For life.

These are the coolest colleges in the area, say dumpster divers
Three of Washington's universities are listed among the top 100 "coolest schools," according to a survey by the dumpster-diving Sierra Club. Of course, your definition of "cool" may differ somewhat from theirs; the rankings are based on the percentage of students with dreadlocks, who smell like patchouli, and wear long skirts over blue jeans. OK, fine, maybe it has something to do with environmental sustainability.

These stubborn boaters are willing to go down with their ships
Rick Carrion has made up his mind: if Hurricane Irene makes landfall this week, he plans to be with his beloved yacht Elf. “Elf is too precious to leave and let something happen. Being aboard, if anything happens I can deal with it effectively and save the boat,” he said. We do not recommend this.

Pandas are the only animals that can't predict an earthquake
You may have realized that the area was experiencing an earthquake when the ground started shaking beneath you. But there's an old saying about animals — they know. While your dog may or may not have been an effective warning, some of the Smithsonian National Zoo's inhabitants knew it was coming.

These escaped emus are keeping Maryland police busy
Last month, an emu was on the lose in Maryland for two weeks before a state trooper shot and killed it. On Saturday night, another emu escaped in the state — this time, in Frederick County — but was captured in a decidedly more humane manner.

Here's video of that mysterious substance in the Anacostia River
After fears that an oil spill had polluted the Anacostia River, the U.S. Coast Guard tested the water and found no oil whatsoever. Now they think it's just silt and mud caused by recent rainstorms, which is both a boring result and a great relief. Tests are expected back later today, but in the meantime, here's an aerial video of the macchiato river shot by the Coast Guard.

Read Bob Barker's punny letter about Rockville's deer problem
If there's an opposite to Ted Nugent in this world, it's Bob Barker. A vegetarian since 1979, the former Price is Right host was always reminding you to help control the pet population by having your pet spayed or neutered. Without a game show to run anymore, he spends his time giving millions to international animal rights groups. His latest issue, though, involves the deer problem in Rockville, Md. — more specifically, a proposal to allow deer hunting.

In which we predict the next natural disaster to hit D.C.
None of the rules of three apply to natural disasters, but let us, for the sake of entertainment on a slow Monday afternoon, consider the awful possibilities — or hilarious impossibilities — of a third disaster hitting the D.C. area in the near future. Several TBD staffers have weighed in; bear in mind that some of them took the phrase "natural disaster" more literally then others.

Don't feel sorry for this sailor who lost his boat in the hurricane
I was as skeptical as the next person of media reports that Hurricane Irene would cause catastrophic damage all the way up the Eastern seaboard. The storm, after all, was only a Category 1. But that doesn't mean I rushed out Saturday afternoon to go paddleboarding on the Potomac. There's a difference between skepticism and stupidity, and some folks this past weekend fell squarely in the latter camp — none more so than Michael Calabrese.

That foul smell in Northwest D.C. is not what you think it is
There's an odd smell coming from the Dalecarlia Water Treatment Plant in Northwest, caused by the cleaning of a sedimentation basin there. Though we can't independently verify it, WTOP is reporting, in so many words, that it smells like shit.

Texas City is losing its battle with egrets, and their feces
The egret population of Carrollton, Texas, is apparently so dense that one Carrolltonite described the hordes as looking like something out of a National Geographic special. Also, the birds are crapping everywhere.
